Jaundice, medically known as ‘Icterus’, means yellow discoloration of skin and eyes. Liver is mainly affected in this condition. There are many causes of this yellow discoloration Infections like Hepatitis and other conditions like gall stones, infections of liver and cirrhosis can also cause this disturbed liver functions and result in jaundice. Some of the conditions like Hepatitis B, Cirrhosis of Liver and Portal hypertension can be life threatening as well.
Ayurveda has described liver as yarkit and yakrit vikar (Liver disorders) are mentioned under kamla roga, and udar roga in Ayurveda. A lot of conditions like ascites, jaundice, obstructed jaundice, gall stones have well been described in Ayurveda literature.
